8 Days in Western Australia: A Self-Drive Guide to Perth, Rottnest Island, and Margaret River

Suitcase2Go Editorial 10 min read

Western Australia rewards travelers who balance open coastal highways with deliberate scheduling. The southwest corner of the continent packs diverse ecosystems into a manageable driving radius: towering karri forests, world-class cabernet and chardonnay estates, subterranean limestone formations, and white sand coastlines.

Covering Perth, Wadjemup / Rottnest Island, and the Margaret River region in eight days allows you to balance urban riverfront walks and offshore island cycling with deep exploration of the Capes. This self-drive itinerary groups sights geographically, accounts for realistic driving times and vehicle restrictions, and integrates statutory entry fees and booking requirements.

Essential Route Logistics and Booking Strategy

Before picking up your rental vehicle, note a few regional regulations:

  • No Private Cars on Rottnest Island: Wadjemup / Rottnest Island is completely car-free. You will leave your vehicle on the mainland (such as at long-term port parking in Fremantle) and navigate the island on foot, by rented bicycle, or using the island shuttle.
  • National Park and Reserve Fees: Visiting the national parks across the South West requires park entry fees. If you plan to visit multiple fee-paying parks, purchasing a holiday pass through Explore Parks WA (such as a 5-day vehicle pass for AUD $30 or a 14-day pass for AUD $50) provides unlimited access to participating Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) parks across the state. Note that standard park passes do not cover commercial show cave tours, lighthouses, or statutory island landing fees.
  • Rottnest Island Admission: Every visitor landing on Rottnest Island must pay an admission fee legislated by the Rottnest Island Authority. For the 2026/2027 fee schedule, the standard day-trip admission fee is AUD $21.50 per adult. Commercial ferry operators collect this statutory fee automatically at checkout, but you must reserve ferry space and hire bicycles well ahead during school holiday periods.
  • Driving Safety: Avoid driving through rural areas of the South West and along Caves Road between dusk and dawn. Western grey kangaroos, emus, and other wildlife are active along road shoulders during twilight hours.

Day 1: Perth Arrival, Swan River Waterfront, and Kings Park

Morning: Arrival and Perth CBD

Land at Perth Airport (PER) and collect your rental vehicle or transfer to your downtown hotel. If your flight arrives early, check into your accommodation in the Perth Central Business District (CBD) or near Elizabeth Quay. Take a morning walk along the waterfront promenade at Elizabeth Quay, where pedestrian bridges offer expansive views of the city skyline and the Swan River.

Afternoon: Kings Park and Botanic Garden

Head west toward Mount Eliza to spend the afternoon at Kings Park and Western Australian Botanic Garden. Encompassing over 400 hectares, this urban park is larger than New York's Central Park and preserves extensive tracts of native bushland alongside curated displays of over 3,000 species of Western Australian flora.

Stroll across the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, an elevated glass-and-steel canopy walk providing vistas through eucalyptus treetops toward the city skyline. Kings Park volunteer guides lead free walking tours twice daily (typically at 10:00 AM and either 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM) departing from Aspects of Kings Park. General entry to Kings Park is free, and public parking is available throughout the precinct.

Evening: Dinner in Central Perth

Spend your evening in the historic heart of Perth. Dine at the State Buildings precinct at the corner of St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street, where restored nineteenth-century public offices now host local bistros, wine bars, and contemporary Australian restaurants.

Day 2: Wadjemup / Rottnest Island Day Trip

Morning: Ferry Departure and Bicycle Collection

Leave your rental vehicle parked at your accommodation or use long-term parking at the ferry terminal. Ferries to Wadjemup / Rottnest Island depart from Fremantle (B Shed or Northport) and Perth's Barrack Street Jetty. Fremantle is the fastest crossing, taking 25 to 35 minutes.

Your ferry booking will incorporate the required Rottnest Island Authority admission fee. Collect your pre-booked rental bicycle directly at the ferry jetty or from the island hire facility. Rottnest Island has paved roads with rolling hills, and cycling is the primary method of exploring its 63 secluded beaches and 20 bays.

Afternoon: Coastal Bays and Wildlife Encounters

Cycle westward along the central or northern loops. Stop at The Basin, a natural limestone swimming pool ideal for snorkeling in calm waters, and continue toward Geordie Bay and Little Salmon Bay. As you explore the island, you will encounter the quokka, a small native marsupial found almost exclusively on Rottnest Island. Observe quokkas from a respectful distance; feeding or touching wildlife is illegal under RIA regulations and carries strict penalties.

If you prefer not to cycle, the Island Explorer hop-on hop-off shuttle bus stops at major bays and heritage points around the perimeter.

Evening: Return to the Mainland

Board a late afternoon ferry back to Fremantle or Perth. Head to Fremantle's fishing boat harbour or South Terrace for casual outdoor seafood before resting ahead of the drive south the following morning.

Day 3: Drive South to Busselton Jetty and Yallingup

  • Total Driving Distance: ~260 km (approx. 3 hours direct driving, excluding stops)

Morning: Journey via the Kwinana and Forrest Freeways

Depart Perth early, following the Kwinana Freeway (State Route 2) and Forrest Highway south toward Bunbury. Take a brief comfort stop at Bunbury or the seaside inlet of Mandurah. Continue south along the Bussell Highway into Geographe Bay.

Afternoon: The Historic Busselton Jetty

Arrive in Busselton by early afternoon. The centerpiece of Geographe Bay is the timber Busselton Jetty, stretching 1.84 kilometers into the ocean.

Visitors walking the full length require a Jetty Walk Pass (AUD $5 for adults aged 17 and over; children 16 and under enter free). To save time, reserve the solar-powered Jetty Train, which travels to the end of the jetty in approximately 45 minutes return. At the seaward end, the guided Underwater Observatory tour descends eight meters below sea level to view an artificial reef teeming with corals, sponges, and marine life. Advance bookings for the train and observatory tours are essential, as space is limited.

Evening: Coastal Check-in at Yallingup

Drive 35 minutes southwest toward Yallingup or Dunsborough at the northern edge of the Margaret River Region. Check into your lodge or guesthouse, and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from the limestone headlands at Yallingup Beach or Canal Rocks.

Day 4: Central Margaret River Wineries, Farm Gates, and Caves

Morning: Vineyard Estates and Tastings

Spend the morning exploring Margaret River's founding agricultural corridor. The region's Mediterranean climate and gravelly loam soils make it world-renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Focus your stops along Caves Road and Tom Cullity Drive, visiting historic estates such as Vasse Felix or Cullen Wines. Many cellar doors offer seated tastings and vineyard tours; advance reservations are recommended, particularly on weekends.

Planning Note: If your travel party includes multiple drivers, nominate a designated non-drinking driver for the day, or arrange a private driver for tasting tours, as regional police conduct routine breath testing.

Afternoon: Subterranean Cave Exploration

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge contains hundreds of limestone caves. Spend the afternoon touring Lake Cave or Mammoth Cave. Lake Cave features a tranquil underground mirror lake beneath a suspended 'hanging table' crystal formation, accessed via a descending sunken glen staircase. Mammoth Cave offers self-guided audio tours that allow you to move at your own pace through vast chambers holding ancient megafauna fossils.

Evening: Margaret River Township

Head into the town of Margaret River for dinner. Browse local artisan galleries along the main street before settling in at a farm-to-table bistro showcasing seasonal South West produce, local truffles, marron, and artisan cheeses.

Day 5: Boranup Karri Forest, Hamelin Bay, and Cape Leeuwin

  • Total Driving Distance: ~110 km round trip

Morning: Boranup Forest Drive and Hamelin Bay

Drive south along Caves Road into the Boranup Karri Forest within Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Karri trees (Eucalyptus diversicolor) are among the tallest hardwood flowering trees in the world, often exceeding 60 meters in height. Stop at the Boranup Lookout to admire the canopy spreading toward the turquoise ocean.

Continue ten minutes south to Hamelin Bay. This sheltered cove is famous for wild stingrays and eagle rays that frequently swim right into the shallows near the boat ramp. Remember that these are wild creatures; observe them quietly without touching or feeding them.

Afternoon: Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

Continue south to Augusta, arriving at the rugged tip where the Southern and Indian Oceans collide. Here sits Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, the tallest mainland lighthouse in Australia at 39 meters tall.

Operated by the Capes Foundation, the precinct is open daily from 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM). Book a guided tower tour to climb the 176 steps to the external gallery deck for sweeping ocean views. The surrounding precinct includes the historic lightkeepers' cottages, which house interactive maritime museum exhibits. Children must be at least four years old to join the tower climb.

Evening: Augusta or Prevelly

Enjoy a relaxed seafood dinner in Augusta overlooking the Blackwood River estuary, or return north along the coast to watch the surf at Prevelly before returning to your base.

Day 6: Cape Naturaliste, Coastal Trails, and Prevelly

Morning: Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Meelup Reserve

Head north to Cape Naturaliste, the northern anchor of the Cape to Cape Track. The walking trails surrounding the lighthouse provide gentle paved walks, wheelchair-accessible lookouts, and access to sheltered beaches at Meelup Regional Park and Bunker Bay. The protected north-facing waters of Meelup Beach are ideal for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding.

Afternoon: Artisan Food and Cultural Producers

Spend the afternoon exploring Margaret River's regional artisans. Visit local olive oil groves, bean-to-bar chocolate factories, and craft breweries clustered along Metricup and Harmans Mill Roads. If you enjoy hiking, walk a 4-to-6-kilometer section of the coastal Cape to Cape Track between Moses Rock and Quinninup Falls.

Evening: Sunset at Surfers Point

End your day at Surfers Point in Prevelly, one of the premier big-wave surf locations in the world. Spectators gather on the tiered timber decks above the break each evening to watch local surfers catch the last waves of the day against the setting sun.

Day 7: Return North via Ferguson Valley to Historic Fremantle

  • Total Driving Distance: ~280 km (approx. 3.5 hours driving)

Morning: Margaret River to Ferguson Valley

Check out of your accommodation and begin the drive back toward Perth. For a picturesque detour off the main highway, branch inland near Bunbury through the rolling green hills of the Ferguson Valley. This boutique wine and agricultural region offers quiet rural scenery and craft breweries.

Afternoon: Fremantle Heritage Precinct

Arrive in Fremantle (known locally as 'Freo') by mid-afternoon. Check into a heritage hotel near the West End. Fremantle preserves one of the most intact nineteenth-century port streetscapes in Australia. Walk through the convict-built Fremantle Prison (a UNESCO World Heritage site) or tour the Western Australian Maritime Museum near the entrance to the working port.

Evening: Dinner along South Terrace

Spend your evening strolling the 'Cappuccino Strip' along South Terrace or dining inside converted wool stores and warehouses. Fremantle is known for its microbreweries, specialty roasters, and lively nightlife.

Day 8: Fremantle Markets, Swan River, and Departure

Morning: Fremantle Markets

If departing on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, spend your morning wandering through the Fremantle Markets, which have operated continuously since 1897. Explore independent stalls featuring local South West produce, honey, indigenous art, and street food. On weekdays, explore the independent bookshops and cafes tucked along High Street.

Afternoon: Transfer to Perth Airport

Pack your vehicle, allow approximately 40 to 50 minutes for the 30-kilometer drive from Fremantle to Perth Airport (PER), return your rental car, and proceed through check-in for your flight home.
